MORNING LIGHT AT MORNINGTON A phone shot of the rising sun on the East Meath coast.

I am a Welsh hobby photographer currently based in the North East of Ireland. I enjoy taking sea and landscape images many of which I post on my Instagram accounts. My interest in photography is primarily a result of my interest in travel.

That said, this interest developed slowly. When I returned from a trip to New York, I realised I had no photos to look back on because it hadn’t even crossed my mind to take pictures. I didn’t even taken a mobile phone to snap any shots. I know New York is probably the most photographed city in the world and there are an infinate number of images online but I regretted not having any images of my own.

So, I splashed out on a Fuji FinePix F440 which was decent in its day but chosen because of its relatively tiny size as opposed to its technical specification (4.1 mega pixels!). The images were OK but on a large computer screen, not ideal. I needed something a little better.

I bought a Nikon D3400 to take on a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia but when I got back home, recognised that the images I’d taken didn’t reflect the experience I had at the various locations. For that reason, I joined Drogheda Photographic Club to understand more about the mechanics and settings of an SLR camera and to learn more about taking ‘making good images’.

I want to try and convey the sense of a location in my photographs - a lofty and ambitious goal, and one that I’ll probably not ever realise fully. I know there is still a great deal of scope for me to improve and I’m still enjoying the journey. I generally take pictures with my Fuji XT-3 or a mobile phone. I use a variety of Fujinon lenses, filters and tripods.
